So we're quickly coming into the Aussie summer months, and the truth is, we love the warm summer sun, the great music events, and the ability to be outdoors more often.
However — for those of us who've grown up in Perth — we know exactly what else comes with our summer season here: epic heatwaves exceeding 40 degrees, regularly.
And honestly, they suck. Unless you have a best friend with an in-ground pool you can spend your days at, or great aircon at home (which just means staying inside all day), you're in for a long few months.
Those of us without either of those options are faced with a harder decision when the Perth mercury starts climbing. We head to Google and start searching "inflatable pool near me" or "small backyard pool options WA," which usually opens up a world of over-priced, temporary solutions.
At the same time, we see a rise every year in last season's inflatables turning up on Marketplace and Gumtree for resale — usually because people aren't happy with the look, the limited use, or the quality. I've done it myself. The reason? It was just too hard and annoying to set up again, it wasted so much water, and it sagged in the sun.
Some of us will still go down that road, and that's a totally valid choice — but a word of warning: if you leave it until the heatwave actually hits, you'll run straight into the "out of stock" sign at every pool supplier in Perth. Trust me, I've been in that exact spot more than once.
So back in 2023, I asked myself: there must be a better option. Surely others have hit this same wall before — so what did they do about it?
I searched. And searched. And searched some more.
Finally, I came across something called a "stock tank pool" — and it was perfect. It was the exact in-between I'd been looking for: sturdy, no annual setup, room to design a proper garden around it, and nowhere near the $40–80K price tag and months of construction an in-ground pool demands. Most importantly for me — I didn't want somewhere to do laps or dive in. I just wanted somewhere to immerse myself in cool water up to my neck, drink in hand, and relax, alone or with a friend or two.
